Northwestern Primary Care Practice-Based Research Program (NP3)
The Northwestern Primary Care Practice-Based Research Program (NP3) aims to foster collaboration between community-based primary care clinicians and Northwestern scientists in order to conduct meaningful and practical studies to improve healthcare delivery and quality of care, engage patients and clinicians in research design and implementation, and promote the use of evidence-based practice in primary care.
A major goal of NP3 is to encourage collaborations among Chicagoland primary care networks. The program provides support for practice-based research in these networks by encouraging communication between academic and community partners, enhancing education related to practice-based research, and sponsoring a seed grant program.
NP3 is a program of the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute’s Center for Community Health, the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics in the Department of Medicine, and the Institute for Public Health and Medicine.
Practice-Based Research Networks
NP3 provides assistance and coordinates activities across Northwestern's primary care practice-based research networks (PBRNs). PBRNs are groups of primary care clinicians and practices working together to answer community-based healthcare questions and translate research findings into practice. PBRNs engage clinicians in quality improvement activities and an evidence-based culture in primary care practice to improve the health of all Americans.
NP3 serves the following PBRNs:
- Federally Qualified Health Centers and community health centers
- Northwestern Medicine Primary Care Research Network: Comprised of the Northwestern Medicine Primary Care practices across the greater Chicago area
- Pediatric Practice Research Group: A partnership of the Department of Pediatrics at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and an enthusiastic group of over 50 pediatric practices.
Seed Grant Program
NP3 offers seed grants for primary care clinicians, primary care clinics/practices and Northwestern University scientists who are collaborating to develop and implement research projects that are responsive to questions and issues of importance to primary care.
