Redefining the modern clinical encounter.

At the Center for Bedside Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, we recognize that the world of modern medicine is ever-changing. With this comes the need to reimagine the clinical encounter — including how we teach and assess clinical skills — in order to meet the current needs of patients, healthcare professionals and healthcare systems. Our center aims to lead this 21st-century revitalization.

Education

The center will reinvigorate the bedside clinical encounter by focusing on the teaching and assessment of fundamental clinical skills, coupled with new technologies including point-of-care devices and AI. We will conduct bedside teaching sessions for learners across the continuum. We will provide faculty development opportunities, including the Assessment of Physical Exam and Communication Skills (APECS). We will also host local and national CME courses on bedside medicine.

Research

We will partner with our clinical affiliates to collect data on learner behavior, clinical skills and wellness across the continuum to inform improvements in the clinical learning environment. We will also partner with our affiliate centers and institutes to investigate the role of technology in the clinical encounter, including point of care devices such as ultrasound, the electronic health record (EHR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
