Cell and Developmental Biology
Ertuğrul Özbudak, PhD, joins Feinberg as the Robert Laughlin Rea Professor of Anatomy and professor of Cell and Developmental Biology in June 2024. The Özbudak Lab’s overriding interest is to achieve a systems-level understanding of the dynamics of tissue pattern formation during embryonic development by integrating quantitative experiments with computational modeling. Prior to starting at Feinberg, he served as the Endowed Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Developmental Biology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Özbudak earned his PhD in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed his postdoctoral research at Cancer Research UK (now Francis Crick Institute).

Microbiology-Immunology
Brandon Jutras, PhD, joins Northwestern as an associate professor of Microbiology-Immunology with tenure in June 2024. Using advanced molecular, biochemical and quantitative microscopy techniques, Jutras studies the pathogenesis of Lyme disease with the goal of uncovering new biological insights for the purposes of diagnosis, treatment and prevention. His research group also studies other pathogenic spirochetes that cause syphilis, relapsing fever and leptospirosis. Previously, Jutras was an associate professor of Biochemistry at Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He earned his doctorate in Microbiology at the University of Kentucky and completed his postdoctoral training at Yale University, where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Postdoctoral Fellow.

Yogesh Goyal, PhD, assistant professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, and Ann Kennedy, PhD, assistant professor of Neuroscience, have been named 2024 Pew Scholars by The Pew Charitable Trusts, which recognizes promising early-career investigators whose research will accelerate discovery and translation in the biomedical sciences.

Alan Hauser, MD, PhD, vice chair of Microbiology-Immunology and professor of Microbiology-Immunology and of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, was named a 2024 Mentor of the Year, an honor presented by Feinberg’s Medical Faculty Council (MFC).
Hauser will be recognized for his award at the 2024 Lewis Landsberg Research Day in September.

Nai-Hsing Yeh Named 2025 Houk Scholar
Nai-Hsing Yeh was named the 2025 Dr. James C. Houk Graduate Fellow by the Department of Neuroscience. Yeh is a Northwestern University Interdepartmental Neuroscience (NUIN) PhD candidate conducting research in the Contractor Lab where she investigates the role of striatal pathways in the motor learning process by using animal behavioral paradigms with in vivo imaging techniques.
The Houk Scholar receives a $10,000 stipend and chooses a neuroscientist to speak at the annual James C. Houk Lecture in Motor Control, which will be held next spring.

New security requirements designed to keep Northwestern safer take effect on July 10. Northwestern IT will turn off SMS passcode and phone call options in the Duo mobile app and enable Duo’s new Verified Push.

Expense Transaction Update: Travel and Entertainment Policy
Northwestern University’s Travel and Entertainment Policy was updated, effective March 1, 2024. In accordance with the updated policy, meals charged to sponsored awards must adhere to the per diem spending limits set by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).
