Intensive Weekends

The MS-HPE program coursework includes four in-person intensive residencies on Northwestern’s beautiful downtown Chicago campus. The required in-person sessions will take place over the course of four consecutive days, beginning Thursdays at 9:00am to Sundays at 12:00pm.

Intensive weekends will allow students the opportunity to connect with their cohort, develop their capstone projects, and explore the beautiful Downtown Chicago campus. Each intensive weekend will include an excursion off-campus.

Intensive Sessions

 Intensive 1 (Fall) - Planning Phase

Students will begin their first intensive with an on-site orientation and breakfast followed by a Chicago Campus tour. Students will develop skills from the How Educational Technology Advances curriculum with James Brucker, MSLIS and Chris Puente and explore the Feinberg Active Learning Classroom and Remote Teaching Studio. Rebekah Burns, MD provides the building blocks to health professions education scholarship in the workshop MedEdPORTAL – Scholarship for Curriculum Design. Developing skills gained during the Curriculum Development for Health Professions Educators course, students will work with Course Director Robyn Bockrath, MD, MEd on How to Give an Elevator Pitch.

 Intensive 2 (Spring) - Manufacturing Phase

Pieces begin to fall into place during the second intensive where students will have the opportunity to build skills in Implementation Science with Dennis Li, PhD and Kelli Scott, PhD. In a panel discussion on Building Skills Necessary for Leadership Positions, students will hear from Roopal Kundu, MD, Elizabeth Walters, PA-C, Susan Ehlers, PhD, RN, CHSE, FSSH, and Lucas Bruton, MD on how to translate their experiences into educational leadership roles at their home institutions. With capstone project plans in motion, students will benefit from a full day of Developing Skills in Program Evaluation with Celia O’Brien, PhD.

 Intensive 3 (Fall) - Assembly Phase

Students will connect their capstone and course work in the third intensive as they participate in the Mastery Learning in Simulation curricula, led by Jeff Barsuk, MD. In the Crafting an Educator Portfolio Workshop with Karen Mangold, MD, MEd and Michael Spewak, MD, students will reflect on their coursework and capstone project progress and develop a tangible resource detailing their educational philosophy and experience as an educator. As they develop as scholars, students will learn about funding opportunities and how to apply for them in the How to Write a Grant workshop with Mark Adler, MD.

 Intensive 4 (Spring) - Launch Phase

The final intensive is a culmination of coursework and capstone development. Students will have an in-person opportunity to build on the Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Belonging coursework with Khalilah Gates, MD and Omari Keeles, PhD, MS, MEd, MA, MPH. Participation in the Upstander and Allyship Workshop with Michelle Fletcher, MD will allow students to further hone these skills. Students can present their research in oral presentations to program faculty and students in a poster session with the Health Professions Educator Clinical Scholar program graduates. The weekend ends with a celebration of the graduates at a send-off brunch.
