Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine offer a one-year, comprehensive sports fellowship in an academic setting. The fellowship is ACGME-accredited, so an individual completing our fellowship will be eligible to take the subspecialty board exam for sports.
Fellows will primarily rotate at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in musculoskeletal and sports medicine clinics, procedure suite clinics (diagnostic and intervention ultrasound, interventional spine) and an inpatient musculoskeletal consult service. Fellows will also work at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) in the student health clinic and athletic training rooms. Other rotations include pediatric sports medicine, orthopedics and fracture clinics at Lurie Children’s hospital. There will be opportunities for additional elective time, including orthopedic surgery clinics at Northwestern, women’s health clinics, as well as electrodiagnostic procedure exposure. The fellow will have exposure to physical therapy and occupational therapy, with emphasis on functional rehabilitation and evidence-based therapeutic treatments.
Fellows will be involved in Division I and club team coverage at Northwestern University, major race event coverage (Chicago Marathon), adaptive sports coverage, and performing arts coverage throughout the year. Fellows will also have teaching responsibilities with residents and medical students through a weekly musculoskeletal lecture series (cadaver anatomy dissection, physical examination and ultrasound small group, pathology and kinesiology lectures), organizing a weekly musculoskeletal journal club and additional opportunities at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. The fellows will participate in and teach at an annual 2-day cadaver interventional ultrasound course at Northwestern that is sponsored by the department.
Fellows have weekly didactics with faculty and a monthly fellows educational series with the Chairman of the PM&R department. Fellows will also be involved in a scholarly activity, which will include conducting original research as well as opportunities for publishing a review article or chapter or presenting at a national meeting. There is flexibility to adapt the fellowship schedule to meet individual interests.
