Dr. Chovatiya received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Yale University where he trained in the laboratory of Dr. Ruslan Medzhitov in the Department of Immunobiology. There he studied the intersection of inflammation and the cell stress response with an emphasis on characterizing soluble mediators of the cell extrinsic stress response. Dr. Chovatiya began his fellowship after his second year of dermatology residency at Northwestern University and commenced his research fellowship with a joint mentoring team consisting of Jonathan Silverberg, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H. (Departments of Dermatology, Preventive Medicine and Medical Social Sciences) and Benjamin Dwight-Clyde McNeil (Department of Medicine, Section of Allergy/Immunology). Under the mentorship of Dr. Silverberg, he has performed clinical and translational studies to characterize the health burden and comorbid health conditions associated with chronic inflammatory skin disease and itch using health records, claims databases, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and clinician-reported outcomes (CROs). Under the mentorship of Dr. McNeil, he has performed basic studies to characterize the production and inflammatory effects of cutaneous IL-31 in murine models of atopic dermatitis. As a clinician scientist, Dr. Chovatiya is interested in applying a combination of these approaches in his future career to better understand and treat patients with atopic dermatitis and pruritus. Dr. Chovatiya has published several original articles during his training and presented his research at a variety of national and international conferences. He has been recognized with a number of awards including the Everett C. Fox, MD Award (AAD), Imrich Sarkany Memorial Award (EADV), Albert M. Kligman / SID Fellowship Award (SID), Rising Derm Stars Award (Foundation for Education and Research in Dermatology), Resident of Distinction Award (Biersdorf Inc.), WDS Mentorship Award (Women’s Dermatology Society), and Goldberg Family Charitable Trust Award (Northwestern Memorial Foundation).
