Mapping Health Facilities in Libya: Crisis Mappers and the WHO
In December 2011, Dr. Chan convened the WHO with volunteer crisis mapping groups to quickly collect information and map Libyan health facilities after civil war violence escalated in Libya. Using the web, Skype, emails, GIS and humanitarian mapping technologies, over 70 team members were able to map more than 680 health facility locations. The Standby Task Force, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap and GISCorps were volunteer partners. This new collaboration helped provide health and geographic information to assist the planning phases of an in-depth country-wide health facility assessment.
