In the realm of cancer care, metastatic breast cancer (MBC) poses significant challenges due to its aggressive nature and potential for widespread impact on the body. While conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery remain primary interventions, there is growing recognition of the importance of integrative health therapies in supporting patients' overall well-being. Research has shown ( 1, 2) that acupuncture, functional nutrition and massage therapy are promising avenues for alleviating symptoms and enhancing quality of life for individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

To help more people find that care, ROOTS & WINGS Charitable Foundation has partnered with The Osher Center for Integrative Health at Northwestern University to offer complimentary integrative health appointments in acupuncture, functional nutrition and massage to MBC patients.

“Our mission at ROOTS & WINGS Charitable Foundation is to support integrative oncology and wellness programs that enhance the emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) patients,” said Diane Keen, founder of ROOTS & WINGS. “We are truly honored to partner with the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Northwestern University. Their expertise and groundbreaking research in integrative, evidence-based medicine are pivotal in addressing the unique needs of MBC patients undergoing continuous oncology treatment.”

About Integrative Therapies

Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and involves the insertion of thin needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the central nervous system. This therapy promotes the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Research has shown that acupuncture can effectively address various symptoms associated with metastatic breast cancer, including pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. By targeting key acupuncture points, practitioners aim to reduce inflammation and improve overall physical and emotional functioning.

A growing body of evidence supports the use of acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy for managing cancer-related symptoms and treatment side effects. In a systematic review published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers found that acupuncture significantly reduced chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. Similarly, studies have demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture in mitigating cancer-related pain and improving sleep quality, contributing to enhanced comfort and well-being for individuals living with metastatic breast cancer.

Moreover, acupuncture's potential role in modulating the immune system has garnered attention in cancer care. By promoting immune function and reducing inflammation, acupuncture may help strengthen the body's natural defenses against cancer progression and enhance the efficacy of conventional treatments. While further research is on the horizon to elucidate the mechanisms underlying acupuncture's benefits in cancer care, its integrative approach holds promise for MBC patients seeking comprehensive support throughout their journey.

Functional nutrition has also been increasingly recognized for its potential benefits in supporting patients diagnosed with cancer. By focusing on individualized nutrition plans tailored to each patient's unique needs, functional nutrition aims to optimize health outcomes, enhance quality of life, and mitigate treatment-related side effects. Research suggests that dietary interventions, such as adopting an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, can help modulate immune function, reduce inflammation, and support overall well-being in cancer patients. Functional nutrition also emphasizes the importance of addressing underlying nutritional deficiencies and optimizing nutrient absorption to support immune health and optimize treatment response.

Massage therapy has also emerged as a valuable therapeutic modality for addressing the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients. Bodywork techniques, such as Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and lymphatic drainage, offer various robust benefits, including pain relief, stress reduction, improved circulation, reduced edema, and enhanced relaxation. For individuals living with MBC, massage therapy can provide much-needed relief from treatment-related discomfort and promote a sense of well-being amid challenging circumstances.

A study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management investigated the effects of massage therapy on pain and anxiety in cancer patients receiving palliative care. The findings revealed that massage therapy significantly reduced pain intensity and anxiety levels, highlighting its potential as a supportive intervention for individuals coping with advanced cancer. Furthermore, massage therapy has been shown to improve sleep quality, reduce fatigue, and enhance overall quality of life for cancer patients undergoing treatment.

The holistic nature of massage therapy extends beyond physical benefits to encompass emotional and psychosocial aspects of care. Through compassionate touch and therapeutic presence, massage therapists create a nurturing environment where patients can experience relaxation, connection, and a sense of being cared for. For metastatic breast cancer patients navigating complex treatment regimens and uncertain outcomes, massage therapy offers a sanctuary of comfort and support, fostering resilience and hope in the face of adversity.

By addressing physical symptoms, alleviating treatment side effects, and nurturing emotional well-being, these whole person modalities complement conventional oncology approaches and empower patients to actively participate in their healing journey. As part of a comprehensive care plan, acupuncture, functional nutrition and massage therapy offer holistic support and enhance the quality of life for individuals facing the challenges of metastatic breast cancer.
