PSTP Programming

Providing a support system to jumpstart a successful career.

Combining research into a medical career is complex. The members of the Starzl Academy leadership have chosen such a path and have drawn on those personal early-career experiences to identify programming that would be most useful to trainees.

This programming includes Academy-developed efforts and existing training offered by other Northwestern units, including the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute formal curricula for lab management, covering topics like staff development, project management and lab safety.

Community Building

The Starzl Academy cross-discipline programs that encourage interactivity and support to those in formal and informal PSTP programs at McGaw.

The College System

Academy trainees divide into four colleges that include junior and senior physician-scientists as well as Physician-Scientist Training Program residents and fellows. Monthly college meetings include presentations by students and faculty addressing topics concerning the career development and wellness.

Virtual Fireside Chats

This is an informal gathering of trainees and our physician-scientist community to discuss the career of a celebrated Northwestern or external physician-scientist. We draw upon junior and senior faculty across gender, racial, generational and academic boundaries to provide trainees with a diverse dialogue.

Northwestern Physician-Scientist Day

This annual event, organized by Academy trainees, invites an internationally recognized physician-scientist to present to the Northwestern community.

Diversity & Inclusion

We aim to increase participation among women physician-scientists, who are underrepresented among NIH grantees. The Sustained Dialogue Program is part of the formal Academy curriculum, covering topics such as racial climate/privilege, religion and mental health.

Departmental Programs
