‘Frontiers of the Brain’ Event Draws Alumni in Naples, Florida
March 5, 2025

Nearly 150 alumni and friends of the medical school gathered in Naples, Florida, on February 26 to hear the latest breakthroughs in brain health featuring experts from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
The Frontiers of the Brain panel discussion headlined a daylong event hosted by the NU Club of Southwest Florida and the Half Century Club of Northwestern University’s Medical Alumni Association at Arthrex One Conference Center. Neurological disorders and psychiatric conditions are leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and the Global Burden of Disease study under the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projects that the number of people living with brain disease will double by 2050. The panelists—Tamar D. Gefen ’12 MS, ’15 PhD, Alfred L. George Jr., MD, and Sachin Patel, MD, PhD—shared updates from their research, findings that are paving the way for better treatments, and ways in which Northwestern is pushing boundaries in the field.
Dr. Gefen is an associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Psychology) and director of the Laboratory for Translational Neuropsychology; Dr. George is chair of the Department of Pharmacology and the Alfred Newton Richards Professor of Pharmacology; and Dr. Patel is chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, director of the new Stephen M. Stahl Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience, and the Lizzie Gilman Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
After the panel discussion, attendees toured Studio X on the Arthrex campus, a 24,000-square-foot facility showcasing state-of-the-art media technology for medical trainees.
