Spotlight on Dylan Gyberg

Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellow
Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellow
How did you first hear about the the work of Dr. Sanjiv Shah, who directs I.AIM’s Center for Deep Phenotyping & Precision Therapeutics?
I first learned about Dr. Sanjiv Shah and his work through a mentor at the University of Minnesota. When I was selected for the Sarnoff Fellowship this past spring, both my mentor and past Sarnoff Fellows encouraged me to Dr. Shah’s lab. His lab’s focus on investigating the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and developing novel machine learning and AI-based techniques to classify and diagnose cardiovascular diseases immediately captured my interest.
What are you plans for the future?
After finishing medical school, I plan on completing an internal medicine residency followed by a cardiovascular disease fellowship. My ultimate goal is to build a career in academic medicine, where I can integrate clinical care with research in cardiovascular disease.
What projects are you currently working on or interested in?
My research has focused on atrial myopathy. I am currently working on a project aimed at identifying proteins that could be protective against this condition. This project integrates several approaches, including epidemiological studies, genetic analyses, and mouse model experiments, to deepen our understanding of atrial myopathy’s pathogenesis and identify potential therapeutic targets.
Would you like to discuss a study you are proud of being associated with?
I’m proud to share a recent study where we developed a method for quantifying atrial myopathy in mice using speckle-tracking echocardiography. Establishment of this method creates a valuable preclinical platform for exploring the pathophysiology of atrial myopathy and uncovering novel molecular mechanisms that could lead to new therapeutic approaches. https://doi.org/10.1161/CIRCIMAGING.123.015735
What advice would you give to a student wanting to get into this field of study?
As someone early in both medical and research training, I cannot overstate the value of mentorship. The guidance, insight, and encouragement I’ve received from mentors have been invaluable in shaping my path so far. I encourage students to seek out mentors who can provide support and help them navigate their journey.
