Residents as Teachers & Leaders

At the Feinberg School of Medicine, students learn the practice of medicine from multiple educators in multiple care settings. To ensure exceptional educational quality across all teaching environments, Feinberg requires all residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors involved in teaching or supervising medical students to be well-prepared for their roles in education and assessment.

The Resident as Teachers and Leaders (RATL) program provides centralized, mandatory training for all residents and fellows, regardless of whether they actively supervise or teach medical students. This program equips trainees with the essential skills needed to excel as clinical educators.

The RATL curriculum includes a series of online modules that all residents and fellows must review annually.  These modules address critical topics such as conflict resolution, giving feedback, fostering a safe and supportive learning environment, addressing bias in learner assessment, avoiding stigmatizing language, and effectively writing assessments for undergraduate medical students in clinical clerkships.

Please Note: Many of these learning modules are hosted in the Northwestern Cloud CME page. You will need to log in to your Cloud CME account to access modules and claim credits. There, you can also check your CME credits and certificates.
