COVID-19 IT Related Resources

Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation, we have seen a dramatic increase in requests for assistance in enabling technology to work remotely. FSM IT is working to make it as easy as possible for people to use various technologies to enable remote work. The following provides answers to frequently asked questions related to technology for working at home. Please review this page and contact fsmhelp@northwestern.edu if you have any issues.

Getting Set Up

Northwestern University has compiled resources to help you teach, learn and work during this time - including web conferencing, online chat and file sharing, and call forwarding and voicemail management.

Preferred video conference tool- Zoom
Zoom- https://northwestern.zoom.us/

Protect your meetings from Zoom bombings with these instructions:
https://www.it.northwestern.edu/transitions/2020/zoombombing.html

Visit the Zoom International Dial-in Numbers page for a list of alternate numbers.

For Feinberg Only

Additionally, we have compiled some Feinberg-specific information to complement these materials.

Self Service (software installation without admin rights)
While FSM-managed computers generally do not allow software installations, there are a number of applications you can install yourself from the Self Service site, including Zoom, Cisco Jabber, and Teams.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
FSM users should follow these instructions for using and configuring a VPN client compatible with the FSM network. Global Protect, a VPN client used in some parts of the University, is not recommended for Feinberg users at this time.

Accessing FSM Resfiles

Many people at Feinberg use FSMResfiles to store and share documents. To access these files, you may need to map a drive. Note: you must be connected to VPN.

Remotely Accessing an On-Campus Computer
Remote Desktop technologies allow someone to view one computer’s desktop on another machine. It simulates actually sitting in front of the remote computer.

If the target computer (office computer) has already been set up to receive remote desktop connections, you can follow these instructions for Mac and Windows. If it hasn’t, please contact fsmhelp@northwestern.edu.

Information For Researchers

Remote Visits
If your studies require remote visits, you may use Zoom to connect with research participants. If you are connecting with patients, please refer to NMHC for guidance on how to conduct clinical visits remotely.

Epic Access
If you require Epic access, please download and install the Citrix receiver. Once Citrix receiver is installed, navigate to access.nmh.org and sign in with your hospital credentials. After logging in to your account, you can launch a Citrix application by single-clicking on the icon. It may take a few moments for the application to virtualize depending on your internet connection and the application you are trying to open.

eConsent
REDCap can be used for eConsenting research participants. Please connect with the REDCap team for answers to your questions redcap@northwestern.edu.
