Health Equity & Advocacy
The burden of illness falls disproportionately on certain groups and communities in ways that have nothing to do with underlying biology or genetic predisposition, but rather reflect historical and contemporary inequalities in the distribution of power, privilege and resources.
The Health Equity & Advocacy thread builds upon the understanding of social determinants of health. The goal of this thread is to highlight evidence regarding best practices for how healthcare providers, healthcare institutions and public health organizations to achieve health equity using strategies to recognize and mitigate individual, institutional and system-level biases.
During clinical training, students will refine their ability to advocate for their individual patients and promote equitable care in the communities they serve.
